The thicker fabrics, including rags, are made on a larger (armenian) loom with a warp loom made of twine and two mitres. The difference in this loom is the comb, which has thinner doors to allow the twine to pass through. Also the shuttle is different to make it receptive to the rags.

The fabric for the rag rugs is made from colourful strips of various used fabrics called "rag yarns", most of which are cotton. Generally, rag weaving is recommended for beginning students as the knitting is simpler and the result is faster compared to other types of handicrafts produced. The designs chosen for the rags are mainly geometric and do not require pre-design on milimeter paper, as confirmed in the video below.

Watch the experienced weaver in the video weaving 3 rags at the same time, making the process look quite simple.

She follows the steps below:

  • She presses the foot on the footrest to open the warps.
  • Then she passes her hand along the shuttle with the weft from right to left until she reaches the other end.
  • She strikes the thread left by the shuttle with the wooden stick to connect firmly with the rest of the weft and with her other hand she passes the shuttle again in the opposite direction.
  • She does not forget to use the xylograph to fix each row of fabric she adds and the process is repeated until the desired dimensions are reached.

She follows the below steps: She does not forget to use the xylograph to fix each row of fabric she adds and the process is repeated until the desired dimensions are reached. She achieves the pattern she has chosen as the design for her rag rug by joining and twisting together two different coloured strips of rag yarn before passing them with the shuttle to the opposite side of the rag.

If you are just starting your weaving career, the rag is a good start!
